How Do We Judge Historical Figures

Recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the hologram statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate on his 125th birth anniversary. This led to a controversy where people started calling Netaji a fascist. From native Indian “eminent intellectuals” to some South Asian “Experts” everyone seems to have an opinion. This monologue uses this recent controversy as an example and is an attempt to talk about the larger issue which is how do we judge historical figures? Are there certain parameters that we can define and then base a framework on which every personality can be judged? Is there an Emic View vs Etic View problem when it comes to historical figures?
