I chat with Vikram Sampath about his book “Savarkar: Echoes from a Forgotten Past, 1883–1924”. This book is the 1st part of a two-book set on the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. In this podcast, I try to cover many issues surrounding Savarkar’s life. We start with his early life and then touch upon Savarkar’s views on caste and cows. We discuss Savarkar’s gruesome torture in the Andaman jail during his punishment. We then touch upon his mercy petitions written to the British and how they were a regular feature of that time. We also take a few audience questions in the end where Vikram answers the viewer’s questions about Savarkar’s thoughts on the Congress party and Muslims as a group of people.
